That’s when the Imperial army you battle throughout FFXV releases Ardyn as a weapon.

But his story successfully taps the latent richness of Final Fantasy 15 that proves surprisingly affecting when it fires on all cylinders.Įpisode Ardyn tells the story of a mystical healer and would-be king, usurped and imprisoned by his younger brother. The should-have-been ruler, aka Ardyn, is subsequently wiped from historical memory. He isn’t freed - or even remembered - until 2000 years later. Not that Ardyn doesn’t fit into some well-worn archetypes. That way I can correct my previous misjudgments. It takes a character that felt underdeveloped and annoyingly trite in FFXV, then turns him into an understandable, well-motivated, and tragic figure that makes me want to replay the main game. However, the overarching events themselves were quite compelling - if only details weren’t fragmented across a dozen transmedia properties. The storytelling structure of FFXV was always a bit of a mess. As with the previous trio of episodes (one for each party member), Ardyn’s offers further context for the antagonist’s personality, fleshes out events merely eluded to within FFXV proper, and expands the lore of the world of Eos. This allowed plenty of room for subsequent, character-focused DLC to fill in the gaps… with details that probably should have been part of the main story. The original plot of Final Fantasy XV was tightly bound to its protagonist, Noctis. As a result, players were left in the dark about anything happening in the world outside his immediate perspective. That leaves Episode Ardyn as the last stop on decade-plus development and post-release tour for the fifteenth Final Fantasy.

Developer Square Enix cut a planned series of four DLC episodes down to one. The Episode Ardyn add-on both is and is about resigning to fate. We get to see the game’s primary villain, Ardyn, before he became an evil menace, along with the betrayals that transformed him into one. The episode starts with the closing act of FFXV, before jumping back some 2000 years. As a prequel chapter, Episode Ardyn, the concluding piece of Final Fantasy XV DLC, tells the earliest part of a story that already has an ending.
