Aside from a size change to accommodate the modern movement, a sapphire crystal, and updated lume, the watch is almost indistinguishable from its forebear. The Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster is an incredibly faithful recreation of the original. The original Chronomaster (that’s a bit easier, isn’t it?) was released in 1963, but Nivada has brought us a recreation on the verge of perfection. Reviewed herein is the dry mouth-inducing Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver Broad Arrow Automatic 86001A. In 2018, the brand was revived with two reissues: the Antarctic and the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver. Since then, it has become a sweetheart of vintage watch hunters, especially their chronographs, which command hefty sums (whether branded with Nivada Grenchen, the American distributor Croton, or both). Founded in 1926, the company thrived until the 1980s, when it succumbed to the quartz crisis. Like so many popular vintage models, these usually sit with overpriced “buy it now” asks, so here’s your chance to get a nice one at auction likely for a much better price. The bezel is very clean on this example, which is great because they are often quite worn. This example has the incredible and high-valued Valjoux 23 caliber, and the dial is clean with a bit of patina to the hands, which only adds to its character. The Croton Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver probably has the coolest name of any watch, and in recent years it has become increasingly more sought after by collectors. Looks like it, because the condition here is ace.Ĭroton – Chronomaster Sea Diver Aviator Chronograph This is #28 of a limited edition of 500, and it’s being sold by the original owner who claims to have purchased it earlier this year. It has that awesome vintage styling, complete with the iconic orange decompression bezel. Case in point, this great Jenny Caribbean 300. With so many “heritage” re-issues of vintage models out there, there are a lot of great vintage-inspired pieces to choose from if you love that old school vibe but don’t want to deal with the headaches often associated with vintage. At 34.5mm it’s not going work for everyone, but this is a really clean dress watch with a reasonable buy-it-now that’s perfect for whoever loves this style of watch.
It features the original signed crown and a great looking raised medallion logo on the back of the unpolished case. With its simple classic dial and thin case and lugs, it has that clean Mad Men styling with the thin lugs and clean silver dial that makes this one easy to like.
